Breathe Easy with the Help of Indoor Plants

Comfort food, early sunsets, jackets and sweaters means the temperatures outside are dropping and the windows are closing no longer allowing the cool breeze to blow through your house. With windows remaining closed for the season - you’re probably feeling that the air inside your home is cleaner than the air outside since you feel more in control of what smells are permeating the air. Did you consider your carpets, paint, caulk, cleaning agents and more are responsible for putting off harsh chemicals into the air you breathe on a daily basis? Those chemicals can linger for days, months and years which leaves many of us sick with anxiety, depression, dizziness, headaches, allergies and the list continues.

There are precautions you can take when it comes to having all the niceties in your home. Some include using VOC free paint, chemical free carpets, nail polish and natural cleaners to name a few. But there may be one thing that has not been given much attention to in terms of cleaning the air in your home or office space: house plants.

Common indoor plants may provide a valuable weapon in the fight against rising levels of indoor air pollution. NASA scientists are finding them to be surprisingly useful in absorbing potentially harmful gases and cleaning the air inside homes, indoor public spaces and office buildings. You may find this hard to believe, but your indoor air is worse than the outdoor air you breathe. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, indoor air is 2 to 5 times worse than outdoor air. Sometimes, it’s 100 times worse. But take a deep breath, because expensive air filtration and ventilation systems aren’t your only options when it comes to mediating the problem.

Best houseplants that remove pollution according to researchers:

Bromeliad

Dracaena

Spider Plant

Jade Plant

Ficus Tree

Boston Fern

Peace Lily

Next time you need a housewarming or a hostess gift, consider buying one of the above houseplants and give the gift of clean air.
